CodeDay coming back to Des Moines May 24

CodeDay, the 24 hour hackathon for high school and college students, is returning to downtown Des Moines May 24-25 with a new host facility: the Science Center of Iowa. Early-bird registration is available at codeday.org/dsm for $10 through May 19.

Brett Neese, an Iowa State University student and regional manager for StudentRND (the Seattle-based organization behind CodeDay), is once again organizing the event.

The great thing about CodeDay is that its a great way to to introduce students to a great community of students (and adults!) passionate about building things with technology. I didn’t have that community when I was younger, I didn’t really have a whole lot of friends in general and that caused a lot of personal and social hardships. Our schools are badly broken - we’ve known this for a long time. CodeDay and the StudentRND community might not revolutionize education but maybe we can do our small part to help and empower students currently in school by connecting them with like minded peers.

Brett is handling all the logistics for several CodeDay events in the region while studying abroad in Hong Kong this semester. He's seeking additional volunteers to help with the project - if you're interested contact him via email

Prior CodeDay events have been held in Des Moines and Cedar Rapids. Ben Milne, CEO of Dwolla (Des Moines) announced a global sponsorship of CodeDay in March.

Geoff Wood has been helping tell the story of the Iowa startup community since 2009. In addition to writing here daily, he hosts a weekly podcast, speaks at conferences and organizes several events in the community.
